As the quest proceeds, Gordon quickly becomes e enmeshed in Schroder's powerful personality, and finds he must struggle merely to maintain himself as an entity apart form Schroder's domain. Then there is Mil, Shcroder's frigidly sensual wife, whose behavior puzzles and wounds Gordon while drawing him to her; Mil, who will ultimately be the means of Gordon's sentimental education, which careens from Paris to Madrid and thence to Seville during Holy Week.
